Hymns in literature and film

I'm teaching an evening class called "Discovering Hymns", and after working my students very hard so they can tell their Watts from their Wesley, and recognise Double Common Metre at a hundred paces, I thought I'd lighten the mood in the final session and give a presentation on allusions to hymns in literature and film. I have a few examples in mind already - the use of office hymns in Dante's Commedia, the Rev. Amos Barton in George Eliot's Scenes from Clerical Life, Thomas Ken's hymns in stories by Kipling & Frances Hodgson Burnett, "Leaning on the everlasting arms" in Night of the Hunter and "Amazing Grace" in Firefly.

But now I'd like you to do the rest of my research for me erm, I mean to say, what are your favourite examples of hymns in literature or on the screen?

What song is this (Kennedy Funeral)

A question

I was watching a scene from the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. At the the moment his coffin was brought into St. Matthew’s Cathedral, the choir sang a most beautiful song.

I asked St. Matthew’s Cathedral staff whether they knew what song it was. They replied it was not Subvenite (the song that is officially listed as the first song that was sung), but a Eucharistic hymn, by a name not known to them. Of course it was 46 years ago, but I still hope it’s possible to find out what song it was.

You can hear the song I’m referring to through the following link:
- The song starts at 2.43 and goes on till 4.11 minutes.

Would you please listen to this song and if possible tell me name of that song, or refer me to somebody who could help me with this?

I hope I’m not bothering you too much with this question, but it would mean a lot to me. Thanking you in advance,

If you were a music director, with an ideal pastor committed to orthodoxy and the best forms of sacred music....and then this pastor asks you to choose a new hymnal to replace the OCP throwaways....

What hymnal would YOU choose?

Chesterton carol

Here is a setting I made for a friend a few years back of this lovely Chesterton poem. It is (to follow on another discussion) more of a hymn than a carol, but seasonal nevertheless. Feel free to reproduce it.

My pastor wants to use a hymn from the St. Gregory hymnal for Holy Family this year and print it in a program. To whom or to what would I address my questions for copyright? Who holds the copyright on the St. Gregory hymnal?

Descants for Familiar Carols

Would anyone happen to have available, in easily transmissible form, descants for any of the following carols:

Once in Royal David’s City
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming
Gabriel’s Message
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing
On Jordan’s Bank
Silent Night
O Come, All Ye Faithful

I was hoping to have our professional violinist play the descant melody during the last verse of at least some of these. And yes, I'm behind the curve: our Lessons & Carols service is tomorrow night. But even if you reply too late, I will keep the music for next year's Lessons & Carols.

Christoph Tietze Introit Hymns?

I found a copy of Christoph Tietze's Introit Hymns (Text only) on Google Books, and was shocked and appalled to fined the Tetragrammaton used. This was a text from 2005, and I was wondering if anyone who had the music edition could tell me whether or not he continued to use this in later editions published after the moratorium on the liturgical use of the Most Holy and Unutterable Name of Almighty GOD from the CDW? If he does, how often? I would like to buy the book, but not if 1 out of 4 texts is unusable.

Does anyone have a good score for this, preferably the authentic unison version?

1. Qui creavit caelum, Lully, lully, lu,

Rex qui regit saeculum, Lully, lully, lu.

5 other verses.

Von Himmel hoch - A solis ortus cardine

I had somewhat envied the Lutherans this tune, as there are some good organ pieces on it.

But see p. 5* here - you can use the melody of Von Himmel hoch with the text of A solis ortus cardine, the Lauds hymn of Christmas morning.

There are other like treasures in this book.

I am tempted to make a usable printout of this, or do a harmonization.

Jan. 1, Veni Creator Spiritus!

It seems fitting to invoke the Holy Spirit at the start of a new calendar year.
This is the first time I've heard that there is a plenary indulgence attached to the recitation of the hymn "Veni Creator Spiritus" on Jan. 1. How thrilling! I'm sure people have interesting tidbits to share about this.
At any rate, keep singing!

Here is John Mason Neale's translation of the Christmas hymn A solis ortus cardine (stanzas 1-7 & a Doxology) by Sedulius set to my Long Meter Double hymn tune ST. CROIX. The Latin score is posted further down the thread.

The sound file presents the SATB hymn once and then the SATB hymn with the last stanza Descant.

Article in AIM magazine on office hymns and scripture

In the Spring magazine/ planning guide from WLP there's an article that discusses one of my hymn translations that is in their new hymnal.

I wanted to point it out not only for the usual self-promotion, but especially because it does an excellent job of teasing out the scriptures that make up the office hymns.

The office hymns are like compact little metrical homilies, bringing scriptures to bear upon one another in a reflective way. They aren't like the Psalter hymns that take a Psalm and versify it (O God Our Help, The King of Love, All People That On Earth Do Dwell, etc. etc.). Instead, they pick and choose scriptures and combine them.

Think of the Scriptures hidden in Creator of the Stars of Night--just to mention one text currently in active memory.

150 Indispensable Catholic Hymns?

Cross-posted at the Chant Café. This is a very casual post. No desire to create a "white-list" repertoire, et cetera. I would really love to hear thoughts from the collective wisdom of this forum!

----------------------

A Chant Café poll:

Imagine that you are in a parish that is slowly and gradually transitioning from "4-hymn sandwich" liturgy to singing the proper antiphons of the Mass. You are doing catechesis on the nature of the proper antiphons as being integral to the liturgy, and are helping your parishioners understand that singing hymns in place of these proper texts is ultimately a substitution for something that is a substantial part of the liturgy. You realize that hymns will not likely disappear from your parish's liturgical celebrations any time soon and you need a small collection of congregational hymns that can serve you through this process of transition, and can serve as supplemental congregational material for liturgical and devotional use even after the propers have been restored to their rightful place.

Which 150 hymns do you want to have in the pews of your parish? Based upon consistency with Catholic doctrine and Church teaching, sound tradition, beauty, dignity, effectiveness, and so on and so forth, which hymns should every Catholic be familiar with and be comfortable singing?

Here is my current working list at my parish. What is missing? What should be removed? Why? Please share your thoughts!

Catholics behaving badly

Organist at Catholic church, on hearing a recording of today's Mass.

NB: I was minorly shocked when I listened to this recording. On the fourth verse "sorrowing, sighing" I accompany on the Swell, thus dropping the organ volume down considerably. You can clearly hear people chattering away during the singing. After 20 years as a church musician, I suppose I shouldn't be shocked to find out people are chattering while they should be singing, but I was, lol. anyway, this is maybe my Most Favorite Hymn to Accompany on the Organ. And I have a lot of fun with it.

"At the Dawning of Creation" set to CORDE NATUS

Kathy Pluth has graciously agreed to the setting of her eloquent pro-life hymn text At the Dawning of Creation to my harmonized hymn tune CORDE NATUS (87. 87. D). This hymn tune of mine was originally composed for Of the Father's Love Begotten and included a descant for the final stanza, but the traditional DIVINUM MYSTERIUM tune for this hymn seems destined to preclude CORDE NATUS ever gaining much traction as an alternative. From the moment I first read Kathy's striking text, I felt that it and my hymn tune would be a good pairing.

For this new setting, I have composed a second descant. This new descant may be used for stanzas 2 and 6, and the original descant may be used for stanzas 4 and 7. Then both descants may be used simultaneously for the final stanza. The two descants will be found on pages 3 and 4 of the enclosed PDF file. Shortly, I will post at CPDL this hymn and a synthesized MP3 recording that includes these two descants. As an aside, those who attended this year's Colloquium XXI might remember that similar "double descants" of mine for Come down, O Love Divine were used in the recessional hymn at the first Mass.

At this time when we recall the tenth anniversary of the insane loss of life of September 11, 2001, it is also important for us to remain aware of and to be ever vigilant for the tragic loss of life of countless unborn children. Take Kathy's words to heart ... and if my tune helps this cause in some small way, then I will be forever grateful.

Revision of Marier's "Hymns, Psalms, and Spiritual Canticles"?

Browsing through this hymnal for about the fourth time (I request it through inter-library loan every year or so, it seems), I'm dying to know: *Are there plans for this hymnal to be revised and re-published?* Overall, it's excellent, and could possible by *the* hymnal that many of us will be looking for once the new translations are at our doorstep.

Anyone in the know regarding this hymnal?

Having just finished yet another hymn translation commission, I wanted to mention that I'm always happy to be asked to do this sort of thing on a sliding-scale professional basis.

Do you run a large program in a big suburban parish with a new paid-for church building and nothing but money? $350 will buy you a custom hymn text that you can use from now until Judgment Day at every parish patronal feast and fish fry.

Are you working in a small declining parish in a poor part of a poor town, or an historic ethnic parish with a huge building upkeep that barely survived the last round of diocesan closings? The same text may be yours for $25.

In-between is in-between, etc. Most folks would be around $225.

Do you have certain Scripture verses in mind? We can do that! A particular rhyme and meter scheme? No problem! A certain saint or saints? Wonderful! A "theme?" Let's talk about it. Heresy? No way!

Dress up your parish's special occasion with a custom-fitted hymn, for the price of a single off-the-rack suit or replacement accompaniment hymnal. The parish is where Catholic life happens, day in and day out. Have something special made to mark this moment in the life of your parish home.

Thrid verse 'O God beyond all praising'

Third verse for Thaxted Does anyone have a third verse for 'O God beyond all praising'? I swear I have used one for an ordination, but I cannot find it. I realize there are only two verses in the original hymn by M. Perry. Is it my mind that has just gone south?
